Quran got wet in the bag: what to do

Quick fix

Take the Quran out immediately, blot (don't rub) the cover and page edges, then stand it upright with the pages slightly fanned in a cool, airy room, putting kitchen paper between wet pages every 20–30 pages and changing it as it gets damp. Don't use a radiator or hairdryer. Once it's dry, press it under heavy books to flatten wavy pages. If the text is lost or the pages have fused, retire it respectfully.

Straight away

Take the Quran out of the bag and remove any cover.
Blot the cover and page edges with a clean towel. Don't rub.
If only the edges are wet, stand it upright, fanned slightly open, in a cool, airy room.
If pages are wet inside, interleave kitchen paper every 20–30 pages and change it when damp.
Don't use heat. Radiators and hairdryers make pages cockle and bindings warp.

Once it's dry

Close it and press it under heavy books for a day or two to flatten wavy pages.
Check for mould spots over the next week, especially in the spine.

When to retire it

If the text has run, pages have fused or mould appears, the Quran should be retired and disposed of respectfully, usually by burial. Our sister service BookBurial does this by post anywhere in the UK.

Can you use a wet Quran after it dries?

Yes, if the text is still clear and there's no mould. If it's badly damaged, dispose of it respectfully by burial.
