An alim bag has to last six to eight years of daily use, so leather is worth the investment over printed canvas that wears out in one. Ours is handmade to order in Scottish leather, with room for a large mushaf, an A4 notebook and a couple of standard kitabs, in black or tan.

The alimiyyah and alimah courses are long. Over six to eight years a bag is opened, dropped, overloaded and carried in all weather, so the cheap canvas option often gets replaced two or three times. A single leather bag costs more at the start and is usually the better value over the course.
