GlossaryWhat is Dars-e-Nizami?
Dars-e-Nizami is a traditional curriculum of Islamic scholarship used by many seminaries (Darul Ulooms) in South Asia and the UK. It is named after Mulla Nizamuddin Sihalwi, an 18th-century scholar of Lucknow associated with its development. It moves from Arabic grammar through logic, fiqh, tafsir and usul to a final year on the major hadith collections.
Structure
Students typically progress over six to eight years from Arabic grammar and morphology, through logic and rhetoric, fiqh and usul al-fiqh, and tafsir, to the dawrah al-hadith final year. Institutions adapt the texts and add subjects.
In the UK
Many UK Darul Ulooms and girls' seminaries follow an adapted Dars-e-Nizami, often alongside national-curriculum study.
