Alimiyyah students often carry a mushaf plus two to four Arabic kitabs, some of them large hardbacks, together weighing 2–5 kg. They need a deeper bag than a child's madrasah bag, a separate place for the Quran so it isn't crushed under other books, a wide strap with reinforced anchors, and a design that suits a young adult.

The alimiyyah course, often called the alim course (alimah for women), usually runs for six to eight years and covers Arabic, fiqh, hadith, tafsir and more. Students carry that year's kitabs to class every day.

What to look for

Depth: kitabs are thick. Check the bag takes 8–10 cm of books.
A Quran sleeve: many students keep the mushaf above or apart from other books out of respect
Strength: reinforced strap anchors and stitching. See seams splitting.
Comfort: a 3 cm+ strap worn cross-body, or a backpack for very heavy days
