Definition
An ijazah is a licence given by a qualified teacher confirming that a student has mastered a text or subject, such as the Quran in a particular recitation, and may teach or transmit it. A Quran ijazah often comes with a sanad: a chain of teachers going back to the Prophet ﷺ.
Common types
- Quran ijazah: after reciting the whole Quran to a qualified teacher, often in a specific qira'ah (see qari)
- Hadith ijazah: permission to narrate hadith collections, often at the end of dawrah al-hadith
- Alimiyyah certificate: on completing the alim course
