Alimah students carry the same heavy kitabs as male students, plus often a spare hijab, niqab or abaya accessories. A good bag has room for two to three kitabs and a mushaf in its own sleeve, a separate pocket for fabric items so they don't crease around books, a comfortable wide strap, and an understated, elegant design.

The alimah course follows much the same syllabus as the alim course and runs at many UK seminaries and girls' Islamic schools, often full-time.

What to look for

Capacity: a mushaf plus two or three kitabs and notebooks
A separate section for a spare hijab or niqab, so it isn't creased or marked by books and pens
A comfortable strap, worn cross-body over an abaya without slipping
Colour: muted, elegant tones like tan, dark brown, black or dusty rose. Avoid dyes that can rub off on light fabric.
