GlossaryWhat is a qari?
A qari (female: qariah; plural: qurra) is an expert reciter of the Quran, trained to a high level in tajweed and often in one or more of the recognised modes of recitation (qira'at). Many qaris hold an ijazah. In UK madrasahs, the title Qari Sahib is often used for a recitation teacher.
Qira'at
The Quran has several recognised modes of recitation (qira'at), transmitted through chains of reciters. Most UK Muslims recite in the Hafs 'an 'Asim transmission. Advanced qaris may learn several.
Training
Qaris study tajweed in depth and recite the whole Quran to a teacher, often receiving an ijazah.
Questions people also ask
Is a qari the same as a hafiz?
No. A hafiz has memorised the Quran; a qari is an expert in recitation. Many people are both.
