Before a new madressa term, spend 15 minutes on four things: check the bag (strap, stitching, zip, smell), check the Quran or Qaidah (loose pages, cover, right edition), restock the kit (exercise book, pencils, topi or hijab, name labels), and ask the teacher what's changing this year, such as moving from the Qaidah to the Quran.
Madressa (madrasah) terms usually restart in September, in January and after Ramadan. This quick routine saves problems in week one.
1. The bag
- Strap and anchors: any loose stitching? (fix a strap)
- Zip or buckles working? (zip fixes)
- Smell or damp? (musty bag)
- Still big enough if they're moving from the Qaidah to the Quran? (size guide)
2. The Quran or Qaidah
- Loose pages or a split spine? (binding repairs)
- Cover clean and labelled?
- Right edition for the new class? Check with the teacher.
3. The kit
- Fresh exercise or hifz book
- Pencils, rubber, sharpener
- Topi or hijab that still fits
- Name labels on everything (how to label)
4. Ask the teacher
- Is my child moving up a level?
- Any new books to buy?
- What practice at home do you recommend? (fitting it in)
