Vegetable-tanned vs chrome-tanned leather

Quick answer

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned slowly with natural tannins from bark and plants; it's firm, holds its shape, and develops a rich patina, but marks more easily with water. Chrome-tanned leather uses chromium salts; it's faster to make, softer, more water-resistant and keeps its colour, and it's how most leather is made today. Both can be excellent if the leather is full-grain.

Which is better for a madrasah bag?

The grade matters more than the tanning method: full-grain of either kind beats "genuine" or bonded leather. See what is full-grain leather.

Questions people also ask

Is vegetable-tanned leather waterproof?

No. It's more prone to water marks than chrome-tanned leather, and benefits from conditioning. Let it dry naturally if it gets wet.
