What is a madrasah bag?

A madrasah bag (also called a mosque bag or Quran bag) is a shoulder bag or satchel used to carry a Quran, Qaidah, notebooks and a pencil case to madrasah, mosque classes or Islamic school. Most are cheap printed canvas; better ones are sized to hold a mushaf flat and protect it from damage.

If you grew up going to evening madrasah in the UK, you probably remember the bag: a thin canvas or nylon shoulder bag, often dark green or black, sometimes with a gold-printed mosque dome on the front. It held your Qaidah or Quran, a lined exercise book, and not much else. Most didn't last more than a year or two.

What a madrasah bag is for

The job of a madrasah bag is simple: get the Quran and study materials to class and back clean, dry and undamaged. That matters more than it would for an ordinary school bag, because many Muslims take care to keep the mushaf off the floor, away from dirt, and not crushed under other things. A dedicated bag makes that easy for a child to do without thinking.
