Part of: Choosing a madrasah bag

Problem

Madrasah bag too heavy for my child

Quick fix

A common guideline is that a child's bag shouldn't regularly weigh more than about 10% of their body weight, so roughly 2–2.5 kg for a typical 7–9-year-old. If a madrasah bag hurts, switch to wearing it cross-body at hip height, use a wider or padded strap, and take out anything not needed that day. Many madrasahs also let children leave the Quran at the mosque.

Check the weight

Weigh the packed bag on bathroom or kitchen scales. A typical madrasah load (medium Quran, exercise book, pencil case, bottle) is about 1.3–1.8 kg before the bag itself. See how heavy is a Quran.

Fixes

  1. Wear it cross-body, not on one shoulder, so the weight spreads.
  2. Shorten the strap so the bag sits at hip height, not bouncing against the back of the knees.
  3. Use a wider or padded strap. A strap pad costs a few pounds.
  4. Take out extras: spare books, toys, a full bottle if water is available.
  5. Ask about a Quran cubby: many madrasahs let children leave their Quran at the mosque and use a lighter copy at home.

When to get advice

If pain continues after the bag is lighter, or your child has back pain at other times, speak to your GP or a physiotherapist.
