A backpack spreads heavy loads better, but the Quran usually ends up squashed among other things and carried behind the child, out of sight. A satchel keeps the Quran flat, visible and separate, and is quicker to open in class. For a typical madrasah load of 1–2 kg, a satchel with a wide cross-body strap works well.

The adab angle
Many parents prefer the Quran not to be mixed in with PE kit, lunchboxes and toys. A dedicated madrasah bag, satchel or not, solves that. If your child uses their school backpack, give the Quran its own zipped cover at least.
Our take
For madrasah alone, a satchel wins. If one bag has to do school and madrasah, a backpack with a padded laptop sleeve used as the Quran compartment is a reasonable compromise.
